How To Draw // preparing your line art for inking
\\ scanning

I'll briefly explain how to prepare your pencilled drawing for digital inking using Photoshop.

Scanning:

Comicbook pages are usually sized at 10 x 15 in, so if you have a scanner that can accommodate that paper size, well and good. But most (including myself) probably has a standard 8 x 12 in scanner. My pin-ups are drawn on a much larger pad of 11 x 17 in. paper, and I usually scan it in sections of two or three. Its a rather time-consuming process, but it has its benefits in the end as I will have a very clean line art to work with.

Its also best to have a scanner that has a PREVIEW option so you can see the area of the image before you actually scan it.

Scan your images in Black and White or Grayscale mode, resolution of 600dpi. As I want my images to be on a 20 x 30 in poster size, I increase the scanning size by 200%.

If you do have to scan your images into sections, its good to draw guidelines in them or crosshairs so it'll be easier for you to align the pieces. To avoid warping of your drawing towards the edges, I recommend scanning outside your guidelines.
