Wrapping it Up

In closing, yes, I understand this whole thing isn’t as much a tutorial as an article on Corel Painter. As of this writing, I do not know if there is any effective way to create a tutorial specific to this topic. The skill (for me) is acquired through repetition, observation and visual reverse-engineering of great comic book inkers.

Experimentation is the key. I take what works and employ them into a style/ technique, I throw away what does not work for me. I constantly devour every book and every article on the topic that I can get my hands on. I look really closely on the works of inkers I admire and try to decipher their techniques, although I know what I do will probably be totally off-base from the professionals, which is another reason I cannot make a proper tutorial. If I teach the wrong way, you’ll do it the wrong way. It just works for me.

So hopefully after all this, you get what you need (as opposed to what you want) and get you into the right mindset to begin your digital inking journey.

Thanks a million for this! When I installed a new version of Corel Painter, my inking looked really off and I couldn’t figure out why. Playing with the brush tracking made such a difference. Seriously, I searched everywhere for this information. Cheers! 😀

Nice tutorial. I’ve never inked in Painter (I usually use PS and Sai). I’m always looking out, though, for a program that can give my digi-inks a more organic and traditional inking look. I’ll have to try this out. Thanks for the tutorial! 🙂
